I Love You #PDX

What’s that song? … “Summer days drifting away…” AH! I think it’s from Grease. But, not the point. It’s stuck in my head and these summer days are going by way too fast!

I recently passed my one year anniversary of living in Oregon. And I can honestly say that I am so happy that I made the move. Yeah, I am still figuring stuff out. Yeah, I miss my family. But I cannot express in words how much I love this state. From the mountains to the coast. From the endless trails to the ever flowing waterfalls. All the coffee shops, all the vegan food. And most importantly all the amazing people.

I encourage anyone and everyone to follow your heart. If there is anything in your life that you have been craving to do. It could be a move or a new hobby you wish to explore, do it. Don’t let the fear of failure or judgment of others deter you. You can make it happen. Believe that.

On to the updates…I know it’s been a while. One big thing… I have been transitioning in and out of a couple different career opportunities. Right now, I am very happy where I am. I am working as a swim instructor and sometimes lesson coordinator at a great athletic club in Portland. I absolutely love what I am doing, the people I work with, and the members I serve.

I am also teaching yoga at Flex & Flow and again love the community that is growing there. That space feels like home. My teaching schedule can be found here. I keep that link updated, but you can also check out our home page. Subbing lots over the next two weeks so come and check the place out if you haven’t already!

You can also find me at Two Suns Massage & Therapy. A little outside of Portland, but classes are beginner friendly, and focus on the needs for your body.

And I am guiding youth and adult hockey players through yoga asana classes. I have partnered with Doug Lynch Hockey and it has been a blast! (More details on this to come!)

And then there has been my normal exploring of the trails, eating all the good food, and oh yeah, I moved! So I have been having fun exploring northeast (#allthefood #allthecoffee). I’m usually posting all that through my Instagram!

Surround Yourself with Good People

I am in this awkward transition period and to be honest it has been putting me in a funk. Some days I’m super motivated to do all the things, and then I plummet and am completely discouraged. Although most days are exhausting, I still have an energy buzzing inside me. The people I connect with, and the work that I am blessed to do, keep me going.

I definitely don’t have everything figured out, but I have this gut feeling that I am headed in the right direction. Everything is telling me that I am on the right path. The people I have met in Portland have been a huge support, even if they don’t know it. They inspire me to be my greatest, they are encouraging, and they express love.

So, I challenge you to take a look at the relationships you keep. Are they serving you? It is a hard thing to look at. Maybe some relationships are better to let go. Also, recognize and appreciate the one’s who are there through it all. The one’s who celebrate you for all your imperfections.

Surround yourself with good people and your days will be brighter.

So much love to you all. Have a blessed day!

New Beginnings

I’m in disbelief at how fast this past year came and went. And then I look back at it all and I am even more shocked that it has only been a year. The journey of transitioning from life in Illinois to life in Oregon has no doubt brought challenges, but it has brought an immense amount of joy. My heart and my soul are full. 2015 is a year that will always stand out.

Now that we are beginning the first full week of the new year, you have most likely set expectations for yourself and the year ahead. I find goals to be great motivators, but we often put too much pressure on ourselves in the beginning of the year to “do it all” and then after a month goes by, if the expectations we had were not fulfilled, we let it all go. Not so great, right? Instead of latching on to expectations and outcomes, find peace with what comes up. Learn to love the ever changing, messiness of life. Come in to the present, accept and surrender to what is, and act with positive and good intention. When each moment comes, embrace it, and find beauty with what is present.

It is the time of new beginnings. New career, new responsibilities, and new opportunities. And I am bouncing off the walls excited to continue sharing my journey with you. Much love to all of you as you go forward this year.

Post Final: Yoga Teacher Training Reflections

This week has been the wrap-up of an 11 week journey for me and 19 other beautiful and amazing yogis. Together we sweat, cried, laughed, got weird, and gained the skills to move bodies through asanas. While this list is small compared to the many experiences we actually went through, the main takeaway for me is love. I feel it every time I walk through Yo Yo Yogi’s doors. Being new to a city, this is probably the best decision I could have made. I now have a family here and a support system and I am so grateful.

My “final”/first 60 minute yoga class was Thursday morning, 8AM. Going into it, I was super nervous, but really excited because I felt strong about my sequence, music, and message. It was an honor to teach to a room full of people I admire and love. Like any yoga class, it wasn’t perfect, nor should it be. With each teaching experience comes growth and improvement. You just have to show up and give it your all.

Looking ahead to what is next, I see so many possibilities. I will continue to teach. I find joy in the process and want to reach as many people as I can and teach them the benefits of yoga. I have no clue where this practice will lead me, but I am ready for all opportunities that come.

There have been many emotions throughout the teacher training: doubt, vulnerability, exhaustion, comfort, excitement… And today it comes to a close. It is “graduation day” and a time to celebrate our accomplishments. After the last two finals this afternoon we will dine out, kick back, and have a few more laughs together.

I want to thank Yo Yo Yogi, Terri, Alex, and Kristi Cole for welcoming me into your family. Thank you for supporting me and giving me the tools to share my voice and spread the yoga love. I also want to thank all my fellow teacher trainees. Mad love to each and every one of you.  yoyoyogis teacher training class fall 2015

Life Updates: YTT, Injury, & Saddle Time

Inhale…Exhale…

It’s incredible how a few deep breaths can drastically help you relax and decrease stress, anxiety, and fear. There has been lots of deep breathing over here as commitments and work hours pile up. Which is why it has been a while since I last posted! So, let’s take this time to catch up.

Yoga Teacher Training

Ah! The past 4 weeks we have gone through many of the postures from the ground up…from integration, through Sun A, Sun B, and standing postures. Learning the flow and figuring out the cueing and most importantly the breath. We are now getting ready to teach our 30 minute class in a week and a half. Which is pretty damn scary. I am slightly overwhelmed with it all and I am doing my best to juggle the classes, reading, and practicing as well as two jobs.

We have also been digging into the anatomy of Yoga, Pranayama, and discussing the philosophy and ethical practice of Yoga. Reading texts like The Eight Limbs of Yoga and The Yamas and Niyamas, which complement each other nicely.

My wonderful group of trainees has been getting me through though. I love each and every one of them and Terry, Alex, and Kristi Cole are simply the best. I am so grateful for this opportunity to study under YoYo Yogis. There is so much to learn and I am trying to absorb it all! But it is good to know that Yoga is a life long thing, and the learning is endless, and it is definitely not a race.

Back in the Saddle

A few weeks ago I hopped back on a bike (not mine) and rode around Oregon City, just southeast of Portland.

One of my clients let me borrow his cross trainer as he showed me around one of his favorite loops. 22 grueling miles with 1,516 feet elevation gain.

This ride kicked my butt. First time out since…Oct? Nov? of last year! It felt so flipping good though. My lungs were screaming, but I couldn’t get the grin off my face. The weather was perfect and the air was fresh. My client is training for an Ironman so I was thankful that he didn’t completely drop me. I had to constantly remind him that this Midwest girl is not used to hills!

Portland Triathlon

The Portland Tri was a couple of weekends back and I had a handful of clients competing. I volunteered during the swim portion so I was able to give everyone a good luck and then cheer for them as they exited the water.

I had a good time, but after spectating the race, I’m not sure if I will do the race in the future. One main reason…the giant hill you have to climb on the run!

Workouts

My recent weekly routine of workouts has been pretty low-key. No training plan, nothing laid out. I have just been doing what feels good on that day. A couple of days a week I have pretty long days and I move around a lot so I generally take those days off. But I have been mainly sticking with yoga and a pyrolates class once, maybe twice a week. Yoga has been the focus and will remain that way for a while.

I am hoping to get on the bike more. I had a friend strip down my bike so I dropped it off to get fixed yesterday!

Physical Therapy

It’s going. Here are all the things I am currently doing for my foot: taping, wearing custom orthotics, wearing stability shoes, ultrasound, deep massage, and icing. Let’s cross our fingers that one of these methods work.

I can’t believe we are already in October and Halloween is just around the corner. I am excited for all fall things: corn mazes, haunted houses, pumpkin patches, hiking, and my best friend is coming to visit at the end of the month!
