A short update…I took the boot off last Thursday. I had it on for one month and one week. Once I took it off I noticed a strain or a discomfort in my big toe and the ligaments that attach to it…go figure, the device that should be helping me heal, strained other parts of my foot. Those strains have gone away, thankfully.
I have been cautious since taking it off. My foot does not feel 100% healed, but it should be right? I might just be overly concerned, I don’t know. I am monitoring it closely and focusing on increasing flexibility and stabilization.
I have worked out a couple of times since then, nothing too strenuous. I hopped on the trainer for a steady ride Thursday morning. Everything felt good! On Saturday it was really nice outside, temperatures hovering around 30 degrees. I took advantage of being able to walk and walked to my hot yoga class (1 mile give or take). Words cannot express how great it felt to be moving. Hot yoga was awesome, per usual, and I was lucky to get my usual teacher, Jodi, for the class. Lots of challenging arm balances, which I love. Afterwards, I grabbed coffee at a local shop and walked back home.
This is progress, but I don’t feel like I am ready to jump into any training program or sign up for any races yet. I am still healing and taking it day to day.
Moving on, I am excited to say that I have been studying to become a personal trainer through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). I “signed up” back in January and I am over half way through the book. I have really been enjoying learning more about the anatomy of the body and some of the science behind how the body works and the effects of training. There has been a lot of information that I have found helpful for myself and my current situation with my injury. This past weekend I was taking notes on exhaustion…
Exhaustion: prolonged stress or stress that is intolerable and will produce exhaustion or distress to the system
– when a stressor is too much for any one of the physiologic systems to handle it causes a breakdown or injury
- stress fractures
- muscle strains
- joint pain
- emotional fatigue
The above pretty much sums up what I went through and what I am still going through. The culmination of a long, tough triathlon season with my first marathon tacked to the end ultimately put me into a state of exhaustion, whether I like to admit it or not. I am learning from my mistakes and when I am healthy I will apply my experience and strive to have more of a balance with my running and training and rest.
As I mentioned in my last Friday Faves post, I was excited for the Academy Awards happening Sunday night. My Mom and I arrived at my Aunt’s house for her party early, because I need to watch the red carpet. The party was a blast. Everyone brought themed appetizers/desserts for judging.
There were awards for best appearance, best theme, and best tasting. My Reese’s WILD Twigs & Berries won best tasting!
I made these blueberry almond cookies. I followed a simple recipe – almond meal, coconut oil, cinnamon, maple syrup, salt, baking soda, vanilla extract, fresh blueberries, and slivered almonds. Super delicious, easy to make, and vegan! Wins all around!
The award show had some great moments. My favorite was Common and John Legend’s performance of Glory. It sent chills through my body. Neil Patrick Harris had a few good jokes in there, but he wasn’t outstanding. Before the show started we all selected who we thought would win and threw in $5 for a friendly wager.
I had 15 right and came in 5th. My Mom was 3rd and came home with some money! I thought Boyhood would win just because they were suspected to be in the running. I only watched three of the best picture nominees, American Sniper, Boyhood, and Birdman. We watched Birdman (winner of best picture for those who don’t bother with the Oscars) the night before and it was really good. Really interesting and different. They use a unique filming technique, the shots were continuous and never cut, very seamless. They also had a rockstar cast who were phenomenal.
By the time the Oscars were over it was 11:30PM and I was so tired (haven’t stayed up that late in a while), but completely worth being exhausted at work the next day.
How was your weekend? Did you watch the Oscars?
Have you had any good workouts recently?
