Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba: Tapas FTW

This weekend was pretty laid back. Which is usually how I like it. Friday after work I was able to get a few things done before I settled in for the night. I switched on Netflix and with my bowl of air-popped popcorn (my absolute fave) I watched Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. This was my first time watching it as it came out in 1994, I was way too young to even have heard about it. But I am a fan of Tarantino (loved Django) and I have always had a soft spot for John Travolta so naturally I thought this movie was great. Yeah, there are disturbing parts, but that is Quentin. A+

Saturday was laid back as well, ran some errands and watched some football. That night though I drove into the city for my friend Daisy’s birthday. After meeting up at a friends we headed to Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba, a tapas restaurant in Lincoln Park. I think I was the only one in the group that had not been there before. We had reservations at 6 and the place was already packed. We ordered a handful of tapas from the vegetables and cheese section and one from the chicken and pork section. I wish I could have taken a picture of each plate, but then I would have constantly had my phone in my hand as they were bringing the dishes out one at a time.

Here’s what we ordered though: brussel sprout salad, marcona almonds, manchego cheese – this was my pick and it was so tasty, shaved brussel sprouts mixed in with the cheese and tiny bits of almond yummm; wood roasted vegetables with toasted pinenuts – good, but not great; spicy potatoes with tomato alioli – these were very good; spinach and manchego stuffed mushrooms – not a mushroom fan so I didn’t try; goat cheese baked in tomato sauce – I loved this, it was served with a garlic type bread, but the mix of goat cheese and tomato sauce was perfect; roast dates with bacon and apple vinagrette – probably my favorite, the bacon was wrapped around the date…so good, sweet and salty.

It was fun trying all the different dishes, but I didn’t feel like I got a full meal. Just a few appetizers, since the dishes were small. It was great catching up with the girls though, all of whom I attended high school with.

After, we went to Pour House in Old Town where we met up with a few other people. It was a fun night, with good friends.

Yesterday was nice and quiet. I drank coffee, practiced yoga, and hung out until the Steelers played. They won the division and will be playing the Ravens (rival) Saturday night!

New Year’s is on Thursday and I still don’t know exactly what I am doing…just trying to enjoy the last few days of 2014 even if I’m working! Well, that’s it for today, have a great Monday!

How was your weekend? Do you have big plans for the New Year?

  1. Looks like you had fun with the girls :) My weekend was much better than the last week…I was finally able to bike and run a little bit without being super sick. It felt GREAT! At this point, we don’t have big New Year plans, but my husband is still sick. We’ll see how he recovers in the next few days and plan accordingly. I hope you enjoy the last few days of 2014. Here’s to an amazing 2015!!

  2. Those tapas sound so good! And your Friday is exactly how I like my Friday to be! I can’t believe you’d never seen Pulp Fiction. It’s one of my very faves, but I didn’t see it when it came out (I was 7 at the time…haha). Happy New Year Jessie!
