For over two years I have been commuting about an hour each way to my job. That is two hours, five days a week sitting in my car. 10 hours each week! Wow, that’s the first time I have done the math and it is a little unsettling.
It can become tiresome as well as a big waste of time. I really would love to be able to use this time for training. Time is money people.
But, over the years I have found ways to be productive, while being safe. Safety while driving is the number one most important thing, but with the invention of bluetooth, we are now able to do more behind the wheel.
So, if you are like me and have a long commute or you have an upcoming road trip and would like to pass the time while being productive then take a look at my suggestions.
– Listen to an E-book
This is a perfect way to unwind and listen to a book that you may have been dying to read, but just can’t find the time. I personally like listening to business/self-help books because I am learning new things. I recently finished The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. I recommend using apps like Audible or OverDrive. If you have a library card you can link it with OverDrive and check out audio books for free and they stream through your phone. Or you can go to your local library and get the book on CDs and play them that way.
– Catch up with family and friends
If and only if you have bluetooth (please do not hold and talk on your phone) you can call family or friends. I love calling my Grandma, sister when she is away at school, and my best friend on my drive home. I am able to chat and connect with them, which is so important. Staying in touch with the one’s you love is necessary to maintain and strengthen relationships. It is often overlooked and brushed to the side. You both will get a boost of energy and good feelings after each conversation.
– Learn something new
There are many audio educational CDs available. If you have an urge to learn a second language or maybe you want to learn how to sing! Your options are endless.
– Listen to Podcasts
I have just discovered the brilliance of podcasts and I am hooked. It is a great way to get your general news or listen to updates on whatever tickles your fancy – if you are into sports, business, investing, medicine, TV, technology, or knitting there is a podcast for you. There are so many podcasts out there you are bound to find one that is interesting.
– Take time to relax
Yes, relaxing can be productive if you rarely get the chance to just sit back and listen to your thoughts. Sometimes after work, I need to chill. I like to play some good music and sort whatever is going on in my head. A lot of the time I plan out meals or workouts. I get to sort out my life and that is definitely needed once in a while.
What do you do when you have a lot of time in your car? Anything different? I would love to know!
